What about Mayan Culture drew you in?
About twenty years ago, when I was an avid SCUBA diver, I went on several dive vacations—many to places in Mexico and Central America. When I wasn’t diving, I took side trips and visited ancient Mayan ruins, such as Chitzen Itza, Tulum, and Altun Ha. Naturally, seeing these places made me want to learn more about them and the people who built them.
What surprised you?
Have you ever seen Mayan artwork? Many of the people are depicted with flat heads. I thought the artists were using artistic license to make people look that way. It surprised me to learn that those flat heads were real. The ancient Maya strapped boards to babies’ heads for six years to get them to look like that. I’m sure glad we don’t do that today!

Books that introduce children or young adults to different cultures should get bonus points and extra attention! 🙂 Having traveled extensively through Central America in a camper, I encountered a lot of Mayan ruins. I’m curious as to why Sherry set the story in Belize and not in Mexico or Guatemala? Because Belize is also an amazing dive (and sailing) destination?
Hi, Liesbet, The setting is in Belize because I had traveled there for a dive vacation. I had been to the sites of Chitzen Itza and Tulum in Mexico as well, but I felt Altun Ha was a better choice because it’s an active archeological site and because such interesting artifacts have been found there, such as the jade head of the Mayan sun god, Kinich Ahua. I also thought it would be fun to teach kids about a country they may have never heard of.
Thanks for the clarification, Sherry. I had a feeling part that your Belize choice had to do with a diving vacation there. 🙂 And, such a good idea to introduce kids to a country they most likely never heard of before. My husband and I loved Belize and even planned to move there (which I briefly touch upon in my upcoming travel memoir). 🙂
